Shire Human Genetic Therapies (HGT) is a business unit of Shire plc, the global biopharmaceutical company. Shire HGT is committed to developing, manufacturing, and commercializing therapies for life-threatening genetic diseases. The company achieves this through collaboration with academic researchers, physicians and patient associations, providing therapies for patients worldwide.
Shire (Firazyr brand of icatibant) a B2 bradykinin receptor antagonist. The German biotechnology company Jerini AG (now acquired by Shire HGT) has completed a US clinical trial of Firazyr (Icatibant). Jerini reported that although the results of this trial were clinically relevant, the focus of the study – median time to onset of symptom relief of drug versus that of placebo – did not reach statistical significance.
A separate concurrent study conducted mostly in Europe did show a statistical significant difference between Firazyr (Icatibant) and Tranexamic Acid (which is used as an acute therapy by some European doctors). Since then, the drug has been licensed in Europe and Shire HGT is now working on plans to conduct antoher clinical trial in the US.
Approved by EMEA for treatment of attacks in all 27 EU countries.
